Actinolite
A green or grayish green silicate mineral of the amphibole group of minerals containing calcium, magnesium and a high iron content. Found in igneous and metamorphic rocks.
Asbestiform Mineral Fibers
In the U.S., asbestos is most commonly defined as the asbestiform variety of 6 naturally occurring hydrated silicate minerals; these include chrysotile, the asbestiform member of the serpentine group, and five minerals of the amphibole group: (1) crocidolite, the asbestiform variety of riebeckite), (2) amosite, the asbestiform variety of cummingtonite-grunerite, (3) anthophyllite asbestos, (4) actinolite asbestos, and (5) tremolite asbestos.
Asbestosis
Scarring of the actual lung tissues (not the Pleural tissue which is outside of the actual lung tissue)
B Top
Benign
Not a threat to life or long-term health, especially by being noncancerous.
Bilateral
Occurring on both sides
C Top
Calcified Plaques
Have deposits of calcium in the scar
Chrysotile
Chrysotile is a mineral of the serpentine group that crystallizes in thin, flexible fibers. It is the most dominant form of asbestos.
D Top
Diffuse
Scattered throughout the lung fields
F Top
Fibrosis

Informed Consent
Informed consent is giving educated consent; e.g understanding the parameters of the research; understanding your rights as a participant and the role your information may serve. Informed consent serves as a wall dividing electronic health information from any research activities, and it is only through informed consent that a patient's unidentified health data would be pushed through the wall to be used for research.
Interstitial
The tissue between the air sacs that are within the lungs. Thus this refers to inside the lungs (also knows as the interstitium)
L Top
Latency
The time period between contact with a pathogen and the development of symptoms.
Libby Amphibole Asbestos
A hydrous silicate mineral that was mined in Libby, Montana containing varying amounts of aluminum, calcium, iron, magnesium and sodium.
M Top
Mesothelioma
A benign or malignant tumor of the lining of the lungs, heart or abdomen. The malignant form is often the result of exposure to asbestos and may take more than 30 years to develop.
Mineralogy
The scientific study of minerals and how to classify, distinguish and locate them.
Monocote
One of the two trade names under which Libby vermiculite products were marketed. Monocote was used to create a fire proofing material to coat all the steel beams used in the construction of the World Trade Center in New York City.
N Top
Non-calcified Plaques
Consist of scar tissue only
O Top
Oximeter
A device for measuring the oxygen saturation of arterial blood.
Oximetry
The measuring of oxygen saturation of the blood by means of an oximeter.
P Top
Parenchyma
The main part of an organ that contains the functioning cells. In this situation it refers to the lungs
Parenchymal Fibrosis
Scarring of the parenchyma.
Plethysmography Box
A system that tracks the measurement of changes in the volume of organs such as the lungs.
Pleural Fibrosis
Scarring of the Pleural lining of the lungs
Pleural Lining
A lining that surrounds the lungs that stretches and expands like a balloon when breathing
Pleural Plaque
A spot of scarring on the Pleural lining
Pleural Thickening
When the lining around the lungs becomes thicker due to the formation of scar tissue along the Pleural lining.
Pneumoconiosis
Disease of the respiratory tract due to inhalation of dust particles
Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)
A procedure to determine capacity of the lungs to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide efficiently.
R Top
Richterite
Amphibole mineral, a sodium silicate of calcium and magnesium or manganese, occurring in thermally metamorphosed limestones, skarns or as a hydrothermal product in alkaline igneous rocks. Richterite is related to tremolite by the substitution of sodium for calcium in richterite’s chemical composition. [http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/502880/richterite]

Sarcoid
A small lesion characteristic of sarcoidosis.
Sarcoidosis
A chronic multisystem disease of unknown origin, characterized by hard granulomas.
T Top
Toxicity
The degree to which something is poisonous.
Tremolite
A white or gray mineral of the amphibole group that is a silicate of calcium and magnesium. (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/tremolite)
V Top
Vermiculite
Any of the various micaceous minerals that are hydrous silicates resulting from the expansion of granules of mica at high temperatures to give a lightweight highly water-absorbent material. (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/vermiculite)

Zonolite
One of two trade names under which Libby vermiculite products were marketed. Zonolite was used to create attic insulation which is estimated to be in some 30 million homes in America.
