ATSDR (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry) http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/ATSDR-HazDat (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry's Hazardous Substance Release/Health Effects Database) The scientific and administrative database that provides access to information on both the release of hazardous substances from Superfund sites or from emergency events, and on the effects of hazardous substances on the health of human populations.
BMI (Body Mass Index) A measure of body fat that is the ratio of the weight of the body in kilograms to the square of its height in meters
CAB (Community Advisory Board)
CAG (Community Advisory Group) Members of the community make up a Superfund Community Advisory Group which serves as the focal point for the exchange of information among the local community, EPA, the state regulatory agency (DEQ), and other pertinent Federal agencies involved in the cleanup of a Superfund site.
CAMP (Community Asbestos Memorial Project) A collaborative effort taken to create a lasting memorial for the miners, family members and community members who have died from asbestos related diseases.
CAP (Community Advisory Partners) Serves as a community forum for communication and direction to guide and assist on Libby amphibole asbestos health related issues and research.
CARD (Center for Asbestos Related Disease) http://www.libbyasbestos.orgCARE (Community Action for a Renewed Environment) http://www.epa.gov/care/index.htm A competitive grant program that offers an innovative way for a community to organize and take action to reduce toxic pollution in its local environment. Through CARE, a community creates a partnership that implements solutions to reduce releases of toxic pollutants and minimize people's exposure to them. CDC (Centers for Disease Control and prevention) http://www.cdc.gov/CERCLA (Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act) http://www.epa.gov/superfund/index.htm Commonly known as the "Superfund," it was enacted by Congress on December 11, 1980. This law created a tax on the chemical and petroleum industries, and provided broad Federal authority to respond directly to releases or threatened releases of hazardous substances that may endanger public health or the environment. The law authorizes two kinds of response actions:
Short-term removals: actions may be taken to address releases or threatened releases requiring prompt response.
Long-term remedial response actions: permanently and significantly reduce the dangers associated with releases or threats of releases of hazardous substances that are serious, but not immediately life threatening. These actions can be conducted only at sites listed on EPA's National Priorities List (NPL).

CORA (Card Outreach Recovery Assistance) Contract with the Center for Mental Health Services for delivery of a Training Manual to address the psychosocial elements of a slow motion technological disaster, as it was recognized that this type of disaster presented new psychological and social issues and challenges that required a novel response. HNA (Health Network of America) Primary payer of ARD healthcare. Voluntary plan; somewhat inconsistent coverage due to hired peer reviews. Also known or formerly known as Triveris, Libby Medical Program "LMP," or The Grace Plan.
HRCT (High Resolution Computer Tomography)
HRS (Hazard Ranking System) The principal tool EPA uses to place waste sites on the National Priorities List (NPL). It is a numerically based screening system that uses information from initial, limited investigations to assess the relative potential of sites posing a threat to human health or the environment.

LAMP (Libby Asbestos Medical Plan) Funded by WR Grace in pursuant to an agreement with the US EPA, in settlement of a lawsuit. Provides health screening services and supplement benefits for services not provided under the existing Grace Libby Medical Program. Governed by ARHCP. Third party administrator is New West Health Services located in Kalispell, MT.
LAMP II (Libby Asbestos Medical Plan II) Third party administrator is New West Health Services. Funded by a state appropriation for 2009-2010. LAMP II benefits replicate FLASH, and pay after the Grace Plan and any private insurance (HNA), but before Medicare, Medicaid and FLASH.
LANDIS (Libby Asbestos Digital Imaging Study) CARD subconstracted with ATSDR and collaborating with St. John's Lutheran Hospital to accomplish a comparison radiographic study to compare digital with hard copy x-rays to see if they are equivalent with regard to detecting and classifying asbestos related pleural abnormalities. This has great merit to update the current asbestos x-ray grading system. Completed in 2008.
LCAVRO (Lincoln County Asbestos Victim Relief Organization) An activist group dedicated to awareness about the Libby asbestos disaster.
LERP (Libby Epidemiology Research Project) CARD has partnered with investigators from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, University of Montana and Idaho State University for research supported by a $4.8 million grant over the next five years from ATSDR, a federal branch of the CDC. The initiative involves a childhood exposure project, an autoimmune project, and a CT scoring project.
Libby PHE (Libby Public Health Emergency) June 17, 2009: EPA declared its first ever PHE under CERCLA. It requires the Federal government to provide screenings and healthcare for Libby residents with asbestos-related disease.
MARF (Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation) http://www.curemeso.org/The national nonprofit dedicated to ending the suffering caused by mesothelioma by funding research, educating patients and advocating for Federal mesothelioma funding.
MASSA (Montana Asbestos Screening and Surveillance Activities) A Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services asbestos screening funded through an ATSDR grant to the state. The program ended September 16, 2008.
MESO (Mesothelioma) A malignant nodular type cancer of the membranes which line the lung cavity. It is another disease related to asbestos exposure. Malignant mesotheliomas are extremely rare in persons with no history of asbestos exposure, but may account for 10% to 18% of excess deaths in workers exposed to asbestos.
