Because of the unique community-wide asbestos exposure that the Libby community has endured, there are some specialized resources available to assist those who were exposed to Libby amphibole asbestos. These programs are available through an application process where eligibility will be determined based on the criteria established by each program.
  • CARD Screening
The Center for Disease Control provides a grant which pays for asbestos screening for individuals who are seen at the CARD clinic in Libby at no cost to qualified patients. CARD Screening involves collection of information related to your asbestos exposure, current health status and health history. A chest x-ray will be done to look at your lungs. A complete breathing test (pulmonary function test) will be done to see how your lungs are functioning. If you think you meet the eligibility criteria to receive CARD Screening services, simply contact CARD to fill out a CARD Screening Application. Submit your application, your eligibility will be verified, and then it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to contact CARD in two weeks to be scheduled for an appointment.

  • LAMP (Libby Asbestos Medical Plan)
The Libby Asbestos Medical Plan (LAMP) became effective September 1, 2003. The funds for the LAMP program have been provided by W.R. Grace & Company pursuant to an agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in settlement of a lawsuit. LAMP II continues the LAMP programs thanks to appropriated funds from the State of Montana. It is anticipated that these funds will last until early 2011. The primary objective of LAMP is to provide health screening services for people who live outside of the Libby area and are unable to travel to Libby. LAMP also provides supplement benefits for services not covered by the existing Grace Libby Medical Program.

  • FLASH (Federal Libby Asbestos Specialty Healthcare)
FLASH benefits are intended to be the ideal medical plan that will cover all asbestos related conditions which are currently recognized by the medical literature as associated with asbestos exposure. This does includes treatment of the asbestos related cancers. FLASH is the payer of last resort. This means that your asbestos related healthcare services must first be billed to your other insurances. Then any deductibles, co-pays, 20%, etc. could be submitted to FLASH. The goal is that it should not cost you anything at all to receive asbestos related healthcare.

  • ARD Medicare Benefits
Medicare Benefits are now available to people who are diagnosed with an asbestos related disease (ARD). If you already have Medicare benefits you do not need to reapply as they are exactly the same benefits you would already have. The long-term plan for the future is finally being defined and should be in place by next year. Medicare will provide their traditional Medicare benefits to people with ARD and they will also provide the ARD “pilot program.” If you would like to apply for benefits : Contact the Social Security Administration, which is the agency responsible for enrolling people for Medicare benefits. They have set up a special phone number just for Libby asbestos claims (1-888-482-3128).

  • W.R. Grace's Voluntary Libby Medical Program
This is a voluntary medical plan and although acceptance may provide some medical and prescription benefits for treatment of your asbestos related disease condition, it does not guarantee that everything your medical provider orders related to ARD will be covered. Coverage of services (doctor visits, x-rays, PFTs, chest CT scans, supplemental oxygen, hospitalizations, surgeries, etc.) will only be covered if HNA (Health Network of America- the plan administer for WR Grace) physicians and radiologists agree that it is related to your asbestos related disease condition. They do not base these decisions on the opinion of the treating medical providers.
